ENG 151: Academic Writing: Interlibrary Loan

Using Interlibrary Loan Services

If you need to use Interlibrary Loan Services and are unfamiliar with how it works, please see the Interlibrary Loan guide (linked below) for more information.  Still have questions? Ask a Librarian!

Requesting Materials

Need to request an article or book via Interlibrary Loan? Check out the How to Request link in the Interlibrary Loan guide. It breaks down by Articles/Chapters and Books/Films/CDs and explains the process for each format.

Article Requests - Things to Note

  • ILL requests for articles are sent only to your SMSU student email account.

  • Your ILL requests for articles often arrive within 72 hours, but don't depend on it. Officially the minimum number of days between request and delivery is 10 days.

  • The articles are usually available for 7 days or 5 access; whichever happens first, so you MUST be looking for your Interlibrary Loan request regularly or they will disappear.

Book Requests - Things to Note

  • Book requests take more time than article requests as we need to allow time for the item to be processed and shipped from the lending library.

  • If you are off-campus student who lives more than 30 miles away from campus and doesn't visit campus weekly, materials may be mailed to you home address.  This will take additional time as we will have to process and ship the material to you after receiving it from the lending library. Items are typically mailed Media Rate through the USPS.

  • Books need to be returned to SMSU by the due date as set by the lending library. Requests for renewal can be made through the My Account feature in MnPALS, the online catalog. These need to be made prior to the due date, and the lending library determines if a renewal will be granted.
