OneSearch is a great one-stop shop for looking for academic sources. Searching OneSearch will bring back all types of resources such as articles, journals, books, electronic books, videos, and government documents. We like to think of OneSearch as the Library's Google because it searches all of our sources in one big search.
After conducting your search, use the filters on the left to narrow to specific resource types, locations, etc.
OneSearch has a number of search scopes (the location that a search should look for resources on your topic). The default in OneSearch is SMSU Print & Online. This will search both the physical items (books, journals, DVDs, etc.) and the online or electronic format items we can access (e.g., online articles, electronic books, streaming videos, open access sources on the internet, government resources).
Additional search scopes include:
Online Sources -- a search of online-only materials we have access to
SMSU Library Print - a search of SMSU collections (although it says Print in the title, some online accessible resources are included, but not from the article databases as found in the SMSU Print & Online search scope)
Education Curriculum Library - a search of only the materials housed in the Education Curriculum Library. These materials include Picture Books, Juvenile Fiction and Non-Fiction, and Teacher Resources. The materials are in order using the Dewey Decimal System to mimic a school library media center. This collection is physically housed in the Deeann Griebel Student Success Center.
All MnPALS Libraries - a search of over 50 library collections in Minnesota
SMSU Library Course Reserves - a search of the items SMSU faculty have put on reserve for students to use in the McFarland Library
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities - a search of the items available at the libraries of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
In addition to the standard search, OneSearch has an AI Assistant available. The OneSearch Assistant uses natural language searching. This means you can enter your research question or statement rather than relying on keyword or subject searching. The Assistant returns five (5) results along with a brief summary of those results and gives a link back to additional resources in OneSearch.
There are a limited number of ways to narrow your results:
By Format: Journal articles -- Peer reviewed -- Books
By Date
By limiting to online availability only
